The Wythe Grays - Company A, 4th Virginia Infantry is now seeking new recruits! The 4th Virginia is a member regiment of the Stonewall Brigade. The 4th VA was founded in 1973 and has been in continuous existence for the past 20 years. It has a rich history of providing high quality living history programs. We currently have 25 active members and we usually field between 14 and 20 per event. Our membership is based primarily in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. With With respect to the "type of unit" - the 4th Virginia is predominantly a "campaign" unit - we seek to portray the average Confederate infantryman as he would appear on campaign (i.e. under military discipline, on the march, traveling light, with period food, etc). Our event schedule over the past couple of years has included events such as the Saylers Creek campaign march, the Rob Hodge Preservation March, McDowell, Burkittsville, War on the James, and several the living history programs for the National Park Service at battlefields such as Gettysburg, Malvern Hill, and Manassas. This coming year, we will be participating in events such as Into the Wilderness, Burkittsville, Shaker's Village, as well as living history programs for the Kernstown Battelfield Association (2nd Kernstown) and also the NPS at Manassas. We are by no-means "exclusive" however - balance is the key - we also occasionally attend medium sized reenactment events such as Cedar Creek and New Market. Most importantly, we perform a variety of living history programs for the National Park Service (Sharpsburg, Gettysburg, Gaines Mill, Malvern Hill, Manassas, etc.). We seek to schedule a maximum of only one event per month, and we do not have a minimum attendance requirement. Overall, I think we have a great balance in terms of our approach to the hobby. We take our duties as living historians seriously and we constantly strive to improve our impression (including not just uniforms and equipment, but also camp life, mind set, first person, drill, etc.). We are also developing our federal impressions (eastern) so that we can participate in future high qualiy federal living history programs.
