PRESERVATION FUNDRAISING INFORMATION:

UPDATE: Preservation Raffle at Payne's Farm

The Cause

The goal of the PF05 event, sponsored by the Stonewall Brigade, is to raise money to purchase and place interpretive signs on the Payne's Farm battlefield under the guidance of the Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT).

The Stonewall Brigade took part in the original battle of Payne's Farm on November 27, 1863 as part of Edward Johnson's division. We are proud to be able to tell these men's stories through interpretation for generations to come. With your help, we can achieve this goal.

Fundraising Goals and How to Raise Funds

CWPT is a Federal tax-exempt 501(c)3 non-profit organization and, therefore, all donations to CWPT are tax-deductible. In order to take advantage of the tax deduction, checks must be made out directly to the CWPT.

It is recommended that each PF05 participant attempt to raise a minimum of $100. Raising preservation funds is fairly easy, although those who have not done it may, incorrectly, believe it to be an odious task. Funds for CWPT projects can be raised as follows:

  • Solicit corporations. Many firms -such as your employer - have an annual budget to contribute funds to charity. Use it! Ask your boss or office manager about a contribution to Civil War battlefield preservation. It's amazing how many of them will say, "yes" to a request for a $100 preservation donation.

  • Ask other re-enactors and Civil War Roundtable members for contributions. $10 to $20 or more may well be a reasonable request to make of "Civil War buffs". PF05 is in October 2005; keep the event in mind at all living history events and reenactments you attend in 2005 and "hit up" fellow re-enactors and/or spectators for this worthy cause. A few bucks here and there will add up quickly.

  • Ask family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers to pony up a small contribution of $5 or $10.

  • Make a personal contribution. $20 is a good starting point. Because the principal goal is to raise funds, personal contributions are fine but, keep in mind, the secondary goal is to raise consciousness for preservation efforts and, to that end, soliciting donations from others is very important.

Approximately 300 re-enactors are expected to participate in the PF05 event. If each participant brings the minimum recommended donation of $100, a total of $30,000 will be raised.

We think, with a little effort, we can raise more than that.

Receipts

Often people and firms that contribute to charity desire a receipt so that they can claim the write-off on their tax returns. Receipts for CWPT for PF05 may be downloaded here:

How to Contribute

Donations should be payable to "CWPT". Write on the memo line of each check: "PF05". CWPT is a Federal tax-exempt 501(c)3 non-profit organization, so all donations are tax-deductible.

PF05 donations for CWPT can be contributed several ways:

  1. Bring donations to the PF05 event and hand them in at registration.
  2. Send donations payable to CWPT to the PF05 registrar with your PF05 event registration: Payne's Farm Registration, c/o Mike Chapman, 5734 N. 15th Street, Arlington, VA 22205
