Deal protects Mine Run campaign site

The Payne's Farm Battle Commemoration and Preservation Event will be held on the original battlefield on October 28-30, 2005. Sponsored by the Stonewall Brigade, this "campaigner" event will be the first time men in blue and gray have walked the ground since the Civil War. This page presents the event concept; details are provided via the links above.

In the spring of 2003, the Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT) and others purchased 685 acres of the original Payne's Farm battlefield. The site, located in Orange County, Virginia - about 25 miles west of Fredericksburg - was the scene of the only significant combat during the late-November 1863 Mine Run campaign. The landscape has changed little since the Civil War, and the CWPT has granted us the use of the entire tract for this event.

The event will attempt to re-create portions of the movements and combat between Maj. Gen. Edward Johnson's Confederate division (Ewell's Second Corps) and Brig. General Joseph Carr's Federal division (French's Third Corps) on November 27, 1863. Confederate participants will re-create the 2nd Virginia, Walker's (Stonewall) Brigade, and the Federals will portray the 151st New York State Volunteers (Morris's Third Brigade). The event will take place on the very ground where the two regiments clashed, and is limited to 300 total infantry participants (150 per side).

The goals of Payne's Farm 2005 include:

  1. Raise funds for CWPT to place interpretive trails and signs on the Payne's Farm battlefield.

  2. Accurately re-create the life of soldiers on campaign in 1863 for a thirty-hour period (Friday evening to Sunday morning). Commanders will be asked to conform to a strict timeline based on the original battle.

  3. To give the participants some new experiences in re-enacting.

  4. To bring to light a little-known campaign of the Civil War in Virginia.

We are looking for dedicated "campaigner" reenactors willing to do what is asked of them in a historically accurate fashion. There will be little or no "down time" for participants. Rations will be issued and will be simple fare based on accounts of the campaign portrayed. Federal participants will march five to six miles on Saturday, along portions of the actual route used by the 151st New York between Jacob's Ford to Payne's farmstead.

We hope you enjoy reading about the event via the links above. Even if you cannot attend the event, please take advantage of the historical and bibliographical information on the site to further your understanding of the men who fought in the Civil War on both sides in this rarely remembered, bitterly-contested campaign.
