33rd Virginia Co. A Volunteer Infantry was founded in 1971 and is incorporated in the state of Indiana as a nonprofit corporation for historical and educational purposes. The IRS has recognized it as a qualified 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization. With more than 30 years of service, 33rd Virginia Co. A has become one of the oldest and most experienced living history organizations in the Midwest. The activities and functions of the organization not only provide the public with a unique educational opportunity but also preserve the memory, the way of life, and the lessons learned from this turbulent time. Throughout the year, the group presents it's Living History in many forms including military and civilian encampments, battle recreations, school programs and lectures, displays, and parades. It is firmly believed that the best educational experience for the public is the ability to see, hear, touch, and smell the history of the War Between the States. In this way, we have been able to provide a living and dynamic portrayal of our history.

The 33rd Virginia takes its identity from a key infantry unit in the famous Stonewall Brigade of the Confederate Army. Today, it is proud to be a part of the modern day Stonewall Brigade. Our partnership with them, one of the premier reenactment organizations in the East, enables us to join our sister units of the Brigade based in the East in recreating this great military organization of the war. Not to be left out, is our Union impression. While primarily a Confederate infantry unit, 33rd Virginia Co. A also has the ability to portray the Union 33rd Indiana as the need and opportunity arises. 33rd Virginia Co. A Volunteer Infantry continues to strive for excellence and to present itself as an organization of good character and authenticity. It is only through the commitment of its members and the experience gained through 30 years of service that the 33rd has been able to grow into the effective organization it is.

The most important aspect, however, of our existence and strive for excellence is our continued dedication to remember and honor the common soldier through our activities. They are the most important part of our nation's heritage and is the one underlying thread that guides the organization. While it easy to have fun in the duties we take up, we must always remember that we do it for them, not for us. As time continues to pass, our duty becomes ever more clear and urgent in educating this and future generations about our nation's heritage.
