Co. D, 27th VA Now |

|
Company D, 27th Virginia Volunteer Infantry now...... Company D, 27th Virginia regiment began on May 2, 1982 with a roster of six men. They applied and became members of the Stonewall Brigade that same year. This stint lasted one year. The company then reapplied in March 1983 and was re-instated into the current Stonewall Brigade. During the mid 1980's, it was determined that a larger military organization was needed so that the other large organizations (ANV and Longstreets Corps) would not overshadow the smaller units. In an attempt to consolidate several smaller units, the Stonewall Brigade became the backbone of the First Confederate Regiment. One mission of this organization was to portray the average Confederate soldier as accurately as possible, in dress, weapons, tactics and impression. In the early 1990's, the FCR dissolved but the Stonewall Brigade and several other former members of the FCR formed Jacksons Division which is the parent organization today. The Stonewall Brigade and company D are known throughout the re-enacting community for its authenticity in dress and tactics. Membership in recent years has been around 40 active members, civilian and military. The unit has participated in every major re-enactment in the eastern theater from First Manassas to Appomattox during both the 125th anniversary and the 135th anniversary battles. The unit also seeks out events where the proceeds go directly to battlefield preservation and it has given direct contributions to the Kemper House Fund in Port Republic and the Kernstown Battlefield Association. Several members are active members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans with one state Division Commander in the ranks. Members volunteer their time in their local communities to educate school and civic groups on the American Civil War and the life of the common soldier. Many members have been extras in the movies "Glory" and "Gettysburg" as well as several public television programs.
